Barbara has been a member of Christ Church since 1969, excepting a 15-year break when she traveled and lived elsewhere. She handles all the accounts payable and receivable and tracks all contributions. The best part of the job, though, is working with her "other" family, Christ Church.
Barbara is married to Ned Whitford, "May Breakfast pancake flipper," and is the proud grandmother of three, Ethan and Abigail Sweeney and Rebecca Freitas. Barbara sings in the Christ Church Choir and loves reading, gardening and knitting.
George Kent, Organist and Choirmaster
George has been Organist and Choirmaster at Christ Church since 1956. A native of Pawcatuck, he sang in the Christ Church Choir as a boy. During his tenure, he has brought music at Christ Church to new heights, teaching child and adult choristers the beauty and power of sacred hymns, psalms, and anthems.
Along with the Rev. James E. Annand, George was instrumental in bringing the C.B. Fisk organ to Christ Church. Installed in 1965, it continues to sound majestically every week.
George is also Professor of Music at the University of Rhode Island. He recently retired as Director of the Westerly Chorus, which he founded in 1959. In 1996 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from New York's General Theological Seminary for his outstanding contribution to church music in America.
