Choir Opportunities for Children

Christ Church offers a rare opportunity for children ages 8-18 to sing in the choir and learn to sing beautiful music every Sunday. The children sing with the adults each week with a "bird's eye view" from the gallery.

All children in the Choir are invited and encouraged to come to Choir Camp in New Hampshire every August where they will learn the music for the upcoming season, make new friends, renew old friendships and create memories that will last a lifetime. Just ask any child in the Choir how much fun they have at Choir Camp and you'll get an earful!!

Singing in the Choir is a commitment. Rehearsals for children are Tuesdays, 4:00pm – 4:45pm and Thursdays with the adults, 7:00pm – 8:15pm, September through June. Sunday mornings we meet at 8:00am for rehearsal before the 9:00am service, with additional services during the Christmas and Easter seasons.

If you're at least 8 years old, or will be by September, and are a boy or a girl who would like to be part of this time-honored, musical tradition here at Christ Church, please contact Mr. Kent through the parish office.

The C.B. Fisk Organ

A short history
In 1961, it was decided that a new organ would be built in Christ Church .  An organ committee was formed, and after extensive research, C.B. Fisk, Inc. was awarded the contract to build a three-manual tracker organ. On the advice of Mr. Fisk and the recommendation of the organ committee, a gallery was constructed at the rear of the nave to house both organ and choir.  Mr. Fisk was able to use in his total design the Milner windows, the inspiring beauty of which seems to have been intensified by their proximity to the magnificent instrument.

Work was begun on the organ in 1962, and parts of it were moved Westerly starting in November 1964.  The instrument was sufficiently complete by Christmas 1964 to add the beauty of its basic design to that Christmas Eve service.  The organ was first used musically in service on Easter Sunday, 1965, and voicing was completed in May.

Since that Easter Day, Opus 45 has provided glorious music for thousands of worshippers, as well as giving a multitude of guest organists a real treat in playing this gem of an instrument; a partial list includes Arno Schoenstedt, Wolfgang Hofmann, Anton Heiller, Michael Radulescu, Heinz Wunderlich, Thomas Murray, Joh Ferris, Simon Preston, Donald Willing, Christopher Herrick, Sir David Willcocks, Martin Neary, Lionel Rogg, Lynne Davis, Philip Ledger (with the Choir of King's College Choir, Cambridge, England), Martha Foltz, Charles Krigbaum, Henry Hokans, James Weaver, Marian Ruhl, Yuko Hayashi, Frank Taylor, Suanne Cleverdon, and Vernon deTar.

About The Choir

The Christ Church Choir, which has been under the direction of organist and choir master George Kent for over 56 years, exists to serve the glory of God through worship in music. The volunteer choir consists of adults and children over the age of eight who sing in the regular weekly choral Eucharists throughout the year. To prepare for these services adult members rehearse weekly on Thursday evenings from 7:00pm to 8:15pm and for one hour before each service sung. The children in the choir rehearse twice weekly, Tuesdaysfrom 4:00-5:00pm, Thursdays with the adults, and again on Sunday mornings with the adults before each service.

Along with the regular weekly services, the choir sings two services of Lessons and Carols for Advent and Christmas where in each service 9 lessons are read and the choir sings corresponding carols. Our Lessons and Carols services are inspired by those of King's College Cambridge and feature traditional favorites and new music as well. The choir also sings Christmas Eve and Christmas morning, Ash Wednesday and all of Holy Week: Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, the Easter Vigil and three services on Easter Sunday. Along with these services, the choir often sings choral evensongs throughout the year, as well as weddings and funerals.

Every August the choir attends a joint music camp in the New Hampshire with the children and staff of The Chorus of Westerly, where the children learn the music for the coming year and enjoy many exciting, invigorating, and exhilarating camp activities. The week-long camp is held at Camp Ogontz in Lyman, New Hampshire on beautiful Lake Ogontz overlooking the White Mountains.

Christ Church offers a rare opportunity for children ages 8-18 to sing in the choir and learn to sing beautiful music every Sunday . The children sing with the adults each week with a "bird's eye view" from the gallery. Mr. Kent is always seeking new child singers to join this dedicated group of joyful volunteers.

Please consider joining the Choir for a musical and spiritual experience unlike any other.
